Kiwi Cairns comes out of retirement to play for Notts in Twenty20 Cup

Former New Zealand international Chris Cairns has been cleared by the England and Wales Cricket Board to play for Nottinghamshire in the Twenty20 Cup.

Cairns, who first played for Notts 20 years ago and has had several spells with the club, has a Dutch wife so he can sign for the county as a European national.

The 38-year-old has come out of retirement to play for the Outlaws and is set to face Yorkshire at Headingley this evening.

Cairns said: "I was always preparing as if I would be playing in the opening game and although I didn't expect any problems it is pleasing that the formalities have been completed.

"I've done well in practice but I'm reticent to make any bold statements because playing in these games is a different proposition altogether.

"There have been a lot of changes to the Notts Outlaws side and there is a healthy mix of young and experienced players and we're hopeful that we can do well in the competition."

Cairns will make a welcome return to Trent Bridge when Notts face Durham Dynamos on Saturday.
