Knees won't nobble Murray's master plan

Andy Murray will have his troublesome right knee examined in Cincinnati later today but insists he will be fit to take part in the latest Masters event.

Murray's excellent challenge in Toronto, which ended in a semi-final defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal, was marred only by the recurring pain he gets from his knee - a problem he was born with.

"It does hurt from time to time in matches," he said. "There's a lot of clicking in the knee. It's going to be with me my whole life."

Murray has a bye into the second round in Cincinnati, where he will play either big-serving American Sam Querry or Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu. He could then meet Richard Gasquet, the Frenchman he beat in the gloom at Wimbledon, followed by a potential semi-final against Roger Federer.

For Federer, beaten in the first round in Toronto, the immediate concern will be retaining his No1 status. Nadal has closed the rankings gap to 300 points and the French Open and Wimbledon champion has a chance of ending the Swiss star's reign if he wins the Cincinnati title and Federer loses before the semi-finals.
