Kuznetsova joins the big-name flops to leave Dementieva as top ranked player

A desperate finish by Svetlana Kuznetsova, as she threw away victory against Agnieszka Radwanska, ensured the women’s quarter-finals will be missing all four top seeds.

With the match poised at one set apiece, Kuznetsova, the No 4 ranked player, led 3-1 in the decider against the 19-year-old from Poland. But the Russian dramatically lost her momentum to slump out 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 and leave Radwanska, the No 14 seed, facing a last-eight meeting with Serena Williams.

That meant Elena Dementieva, the fifth seed, suddenly found herself the highest-ranked player left in the tournament after her 6-2, 6-1 cruise over Israel’s Shahar Peer. She will now face Nadia Petrova, the No 21 seed, who also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, against fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva.

As if beating top seed Ana Ivanovic was not enough, China’s Zheng Jie extended her excellent Wimbledon by becoming the first wild-card to reach the women’s quarter-finals.

The 24-year-old, ranked No 133 in the world, followed up her Friday night heroics with another convincing display as she sent 15th seed Agnes Szavay packing in straight sets.

Zheng, better known as a doubles specialist, broke the Hungarian once in the first set and twice in the second to win 6-3, 6-4. She becomes only the second Chinese player to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals, matching the achievement of Li Na two years ago.

‘Today is the best tennis I’ve played,’ said Zheng.

‘Maybe I should play on the grasscourts more often. I feel getting into the quarter-final is fine. I don’t want to think too much about the semi-finals.’

Zheng now faces Nicole Vaidisova for a place in the last four following the Czech’s victory over Anna Chakvetadze.

Vaidisova overcame an indifferent start to dominate the No 8 seed, winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

‘I made the quarters here last year and to be here again is so exciting,’ said Vaidisova.
