Last man to play international football and cricket for England dies

Arthur Milton, the last man to play international football and cricket for England, has died at home in Bristol at the age of 79.

Milton, who played on the wing, joined Arsenal in 1945 as an amateur and was called for his one cap in a 2-2 draw with Austria in 1951 after making only 12 League appearances.

He played 84 games for Arsenal, scoring 21 goals, and was a member of their Championship-winning side of 1953.

Milton was later sold to Bristol City, aged 27, for £5,000 and played a key role in helping them to promotion to the old Division Two before retiring to concentrate on cricket.

He batted for Gloucestershire, scoring more than 32,000 runs and captained the county in 1968.

He scored 52 centuries and retired in 1974 aged 46.

Milton made six Test appearances for England between 1958 and 1959 and scored a century on his debut against New Zealand at Headingley.

He leaves a wife, Joan, and three sons.
