Cotterill in action against Norway on Wednesday night
Wales international Cotterill has made just two appearances in the Premier League, at Tottenham and at home to Fulham, as well as appearing in the Carling Cup against Hull City and the FA Cup victory at Sunderland, where he scored the third goal. However, he has failed to feature in any Premier League game under Steve Bruce, and was an unused substitute in Bruce's first two games in charge, against Manchester City and Bolton. Bruce said: "David is a tremendous prospect. He's a full international at a tender age and he is certainly one for the future.
"A layer of his qualities needs games and we feel this is a good opportunity for him to maintain his sharpness and get some more competitive football under his belt.
"We wish him all the best in his time at Bramall Lane." Cotterill joined Latics on deadline day in August 2006 and to date has appeared 18 times in the Premier League, making seven starts.
He has scored one – spectacular – goal at West Ham in the 2006-07 season. He has made 21 appearances in total, scoring two goals.
He has played seven times for the senior Wales squad in his time at Latics, the last of which was in the 3-0 win over Norway last Wednesday.
He has also appeared three times for the Wales Under 21s.
