Laws steels himself to make history in Sheffield derby

Brian Laws craves a place in Sheffield derby history as a means of keeping Wednesday in the Championship.

Tuesday's Steel City battle at Bramall Lane sees the Owls attempt to do the double over the Blades for the first time since the outbreak of World War One.

Laws, whose Hillsborough derby victory three months ago pushed rival boss Bryan Robson towards the sack, said: 'I want to be the manager who beats United twice in a season for the first time in 94 years. And I want our players' names to go down in history for the same reason.'

But the Wednesday chief has little idea of their identity after an injury crisis yesterday resulted in a fourth regular, Sean McAllister, being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Typically, Laws tried to turn that into a positive, adding: 'United won't know how to prepare because even I don't know who's playing. I also think the pressure is on them because, having lost the first game, they will be out to regain some pride.'

Realistically, Wednesday's need is the greater. Despite losing only once in 11 games, five successive draws have kept them above the drop zone. 'We need two wins to stay up,' says Laws.

Blades boss Kevin Blackwell insists promotion is still possible, with his side within five points of sixth-placed Wolves.

'Until it's impossible, the play-offs have to be our target and everyone is playing for their future here, me included,' said the caretaker manager, expected to be confirmed in the job soon.

'I wasn't here when we lost at Hillsborough, but we've got to put that right for our fans.'
