Legendary Australian rider Moore is mourned

George Moore, one of Australia's finest riding exports to Europe, has died, just over a year after compatriot and fellow great Scobie Breasley.

Moore formed a winning partnership with trainer Tommy Smith in his homeland in the Fifties and Sixties before conquering Europe.

Moore: One of the best

In 1967, he teamed up with Noel Murless to win the 2,000 Guineas and Derby on Royal Palace, the 1,000 Guineas on Fleet and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Busted. He also rode with distinction in France for Alec Head and owner Prince Aly Khan, landing the 1959 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Saint Crespin III.

He had a record 119 Group One winners in Australia, and, after retiring in 1971, became a successful trainer at home, in France and in Hong Kong, where he was champion 11 times. He is survived by wife, Iris, and trainer sons, Gary and John.
