Let's sort it with Terry and Lampard, pleads Jose

Jose Mourinho has pleaded with Chelsea to break the deadlock over new deals for John Terry and Frank Lampard. The England stars have been warned to drop some of their demands, but Stamford Bridge boss Mourinho said: "I think now is the time for people to speak, to have a calm dialogue."

Both players expressed a desire to remain at the club after Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup Final victory over Manchester United - and the Chelsea hierarchy seem ready to make Lampard the highest-paid player in the Premiership.

But Terry, 26, wants a nine-year contract, as well as a clause that will enable him one day to become the club's manager. Lampard, 28, is also looking for a deal that will take him into his mid-thirties.

That is a major sticking point for Chelsea, given the vast sums of money involved - Lampard would join Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko on around £130,000 a week. If a resolution is going to be reached, ground needs to be conceded on both sides.

The ball appears to be firmly in the court of owner Roman Abramovich, who put aside his troubled relationship with manager Mourinho on Saturday to congratulate the Chelsea players after their win.

Meanwhile, contract talks with Terry and Lampard have stalled and Mourinho has called for an end to the impasse, saying: "You're speaking about players with a passion for the club, players the club have a passion for; players with contracts, not players leaving at the end of contracts.

"We are speaking about players who want to stay. These two boys can say they won everything in English football in these three years. I feel they want more."

Veiled threats are nevertheless being issued - close associates of Lampard have let it be known that the cup final could prove to be his last game in a Chelsea shirt - even if the players themselves have publicly declared a desire to stay.

After Didier Drogba's extra-time goal won the trophy for Chelsea, Terry dismissed talk that he would hand in a transfer request. "I'm happy here and hopefully things can be resolved. I'd like it done as soon as possible."

Lampard, who became a father again on Sunday when fiancee Elen Rives gave birth to their second daughter, Isla, in London, echoed the sentiment.

Lampard said: "My intention is to stay at Chelsea for life and it's in the club's hands. Hopefully it can be sorted very soon. I love this club."

Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, said it was now his main priority to secure the futures of the club's skipper and vice-captain "pretty quickly".

MANCHESTER United expect to tie up the £18m transfer of England midfielder Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich this week after agreeing terms with the German club.

The 26-year-old will undergo a medical ahead of signing a fiveyear deal at Old Trafford worth about £60,000 a week.
