Lewis come through storm and warns: I'm just here to win

Lewis Hamilton, changed from sharp suit into race overalls, was just fractions off the pace in practice ahead of tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix.

The British rookie notched the second fastest time, pipped by his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso by one-tenth of a second, less than 24 hours after his title bid was saved in a Paris courtroom.

The World Drivers' Championship is effectively a private squabble between the two bitter rivals, with three points separating leader Hamilton from the Spaniard with four races remaining.

Hamilton, so impressive at Spa during testing in July, shrugged off the Spygate controversy, saying: "The team's just as enthusiastic as always. We went through the programme today.

"It's quite easy to focus on the job. If anything it's harder for the team but they are doing a great job."

The race marks a welcome return for the famous Spa circuit which curves and climbs through the Ardennes. With its famous Eau Rouge-Raidillon combination — a sweeping left-right-left sequence — it is a favourite of drivers and fans.

The weather is capricious in these parts area — it once rained here for 20 grands prix in a row — but Hamilton has weathered bigger storms this week. "My job is simple," he said. "I'm here to win."
