Lewis in the brink

Lewis Hamilton can clinch an historic Formula One world title with victory in China on Sunday after producing the drive of his life to win the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix.

The Briton's fourth triumph of an amazing debut season extended his lead over McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso — who spun off — to 12 points with two races remaining. It means Hamilton, 22, will be first year. It's way, way beyond what I could have thought."

Jumping for joy: Hamilton celebrates

Alonso, who was helped to his second championship last year when Michael Schumacher's engine blew in the penultimate round in Japan, admitted he faces a tough job to defend his title.

He said: "I'm not throwing in the towel, but unless there is a retirement from Hamilton we have to be realistic and say it's very hard to recover six points per race."

With Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen 17 points off the lead and all but mathematically out of the title race, Hamilton, who won from pole, is on the verge of joining the eight British legends to win motor racing's greatest prize — Mike Hawthorn, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Sir Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.

Hamilton's father and manager Anthony said: "Although we've won today, I still feel the same now as I did before the race. You've got to wait until you've brought it home. Then it's all different.

"We'll just go back to the hotel and have a meal. Just have an early night. You start celebrating now and you could end up with egg on your face.

"It's great not just for us, but for everybody: the UK, the world and anybody who just likes underdogs in sport.

"I think Lewis will be buzzing tonight, but when he gets up he'll be back to normal.'
