Lions players given £45,000 carrot to beat South Africa

The Lions will each earn as much as £45,000 if they beat the Springboks in South Africa next year. A 'substantial' increase in the flat fee for the 10-match tour next summer will make selection for the 35-man squad worth about £35,000.

A series win against the world champions will increase that by £10,000 on a tour which will generate £10million in sponsorship and other deals.

No go: Brian Smith

The fees on offer, for what ought to be no more than five matches per player, should save the Lions having to haggle, unlike the Professional Rugby Players' Association, who are arguing with the RFU on behalf of the England squad.

The RFU, who pay an appearance fee of £9,000-a-man, want to reduce it in favour of an incentive scheme similar to the one operated by Wales.

PRA chief executive Damian Hopley yesterday dismissed any question of strike action. "We are in the midst of on-going negotiations which have been conducted in a good-natured manner. The last thing we want is to tear up any script," he said.

England are still looking for an attack coach, the position offered to Shaun Edwards before he signed a three-year deal with Wales. London Irish rejected a request to approach director of rugby Brian Smith.

Wales' 27-man squad for next month's two Tests in South Africa includes three uncapped players —Ospreys centre Andrew Bishop, Cardiff lock Bradley Davies and London Irish scrum half Warren Fury.

WALES SQUAD — Backs: Stoddart, Bishop, Roberts, S Williams, James, M Jones, Parker, Shanklin, S Jones, Hook, A Williams, Fury, Cooper. Forwards: Duncan Jones, Jenkins, A Jones, R Thomas, Rees, Bennett, Gough, A-W Jones, Evans, Davies, J Thomas, Dafydd Jones, G Delve, R Jones (capt).
