Liverpool boss Benitez could make a move for Valencia and Spain star Silva

Rafael Benitez is set to shelve his plans to buy Gareth Barry and move for cash-strapped Valencia midfielder David Silva.

The Spanish club have debts of £400million, with a new £250m stadium needing to be funded, and they have already rejected one bid of £17m bid for Silva from Atletico Madrid.

That figure is reportedly lower than Benitez expected Valencia to demand for the player, and the Liverpool boss could use his former connection with the club to strike a deal.

Silva, who was superb for Spain in their triumph at Euro 2008, has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham.

Real Madrid are certain to make a move for the player however, if they miss out on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Benitez is refusing to budge on his stance that Villa's Barry is overpriced at £18m.

The Sun are also reporting that Benitez is hoping to give Robbie Keane his Liverpool debut in their friendly at Rangers on Saturday.

Keane seems certain to move over the next few days, with his £20m transfer moving closer when he was left out of Tottenham's friendly in Alicante last week.
