Liverpool chief extends sporting empire

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks is reportedly interested in further expanding his sporting empire by investing in NASCAR, the premier auto racing circuit in North America.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Hicks has been in talks with Richard Childress, owner of Richard Childress Racing, about getting involved, and was invited to last Sunday's race in California by Childress.

"They wanted to look at our sport," Childress told the Morning News. "I think it would be great if they wanted to get involved."

Tom Hicks Jr, who is vice president of his father's Hicks Sports Group, confirmed the company was interested.

"We would like to be opportunistic," he said, "and would consider making an investment in the sport if we thought a deal created value for the team and us."

Hicks is the owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, the Dallas Stars hockey team and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. Last year, he partnered with Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillette to buy Liverpool.
