Liverpool winger Babel expects success in Marseille

Ryan Babel has backed his Liverpool team-mates to handle the pressure of tonight's Champions League showdown with Marseille.

Only a win will guarantee the Reds their place in the last 16 of the competition after back to back home wins against Besiktas and Porto put them back in the hunt.

The Dutch winger believes the self belief gained in those wins has given the team confidence to forget about Saturday's 3-1 loss to Reading in the Premier League and deliver tonight.

He said: "Those wins will definitely make us believe we can reach the level we need to.

"If you play for Liverpool, there is always pressure but for the boys this is just another game — but we know how important it is."

Boss Rafa Benitez agrees, adding that Liverpool's 2005 success in the competition will hold them in good stead.

"We know how to play under pressure," said the Spaniard.

"If you want to win trophies, you must play in finals. And for us, this is a final.

"We have experience of these situations."

But Marseille coach Eric Gerets believes there are other factors involved.

He said: "It's true that they have more experience than us.

"But a colleague once said to me about a match, 'On paper, we have no chance'.

"I replied to him that fortunately a match is not played on paper. They are slight favourites but we are at home in front of our own fans and that will mean a lot."
