Liverpool won't sell Torres even for a world-record fee, vows co-owner Hicks

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks fired a warning to Chelsea yesterday by insisting Fernando Torres was not for sale 'at any price'.

Hicks stepped into the row over Torres' future in the wake of more claims that Chelsea have prepared a £40m bid for the prolific Spain striker..

Manager Rafa Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry have both outlined their determination to hang on to last season's top scorer, and Hicks has now added his voice to Liverpool's defiant stance amid growing concerns that Chelsea mean business.

'There is no price at which we would consider selling Fernando Torres,' said the Texas-based Anfield chief.

'The Chelsea rumours in the media are total rubbish.'

Worryingly for Liverpool, Chelsea are serious about funding an ambitious move for one of new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari's prime targets, even if it has little chance of succeeding.

After seeing the former Atletico Madrid frontrunner become an instant Kop hero, following a club record £21m arrival last summer, Hicks is acutely aware that caving in to Chelsea would spark the biggest public outcry of his ill-fated reign.
