Liverpool's bitter memories of Inter from '65

Tommy Smith kicked the referee after Liverpool's European Cup defeat by Inter Milan 43 years ago and got away with it — but he still cannot contain his anger when he recalls the bitter exit at San Siro.

Liverpool won the first leg of the semi-final 3-1 but went down 3-0 in the return and have never forgiven Spanish official Jose Maria Ortiz de Mendebil.

Putting the boot in: Smith is still angry at the referee's performance when he faced Inter

Smith, a tough tackling defender in his time, said: 'To this day I can still see the referee holding his arm up to signal an indirect free-kick. Next thing their left half Mario Corso pops up and chips the ball straight past Tommy Lawrence.

'I'm not saying any of the Inter players were on the fiddle, but the fact is the ball didn't touch anyone and the referee was adamant it was a goal. Their second was just as bad. Tommy had the ball in his hands and as he bounced it to kick it clear, Joaquim Peiro crept in from behind him to nick the ball and roll it into the net.'

Striker Ian St John added: 'It was a huge injustice and we had a legitimate goal chalked off when I ran on to a through ball and stuck it in the net. Nobody knew what the ref blew for and they never showed a TV replay. We were lucky to get the kick-off after they scored.'
