Llanelli wiped out a 19-point deficit at Rodney Parade on Wednesday night to snatch an improbable win three minutes from the end of a storming revival.

In a veritable game of two halves, the Scarlets responded to a half-time crisis by coming from 25-6 down to score 21 unanswered points, build on the flying start of their weekend win over Ulster in Belfast and follow the Ospreys towards the top of the Magners League.

Wales fly half Stephen Jones directed the salvage operation, rounding off the down-wind recovery with the winning penalty just when the Dragons believed they had weathered the storm.

The Gwent club had threatened to win the match at a canter. Fly half James Arlidge nailed two early penalties before Australian centres Marc Stcherbina and Rory Sidey combined to create the opening try for left wing Richard Fussell.

Tom Willis exploited a sloppy Llanelli line-out to pounce for a second and the Dragons’ former All Black captain then watched No 8 Lewis Evans help himself to a third try four minutes before the break.

Once Jones had cut the gap with two close-range penalties, Llanelli turned the tide with substitute scrum half Martin Roberts’ first try for the club and a second engineered in textbook fashion by full back Morgan Stoddart for substitute wing Nathan Brew.

As the Dragons held on with increasing desperation, Brew knocked on with the line at his mercy and Jones missed a simple drop goal only for one of the Newport pack to give him the decisivepenalty.
