Look out Fergie - Wenger issues warning after Gunners make their point in Anfield thriller

Arsene Wenger last night warned Sir Alex Ferguson that Arsenal are strong enough to dethrone Manchester United.

Table-topping Gunners salvaged a point at Anfield through Cesc Fabregas after Steven Gerrard had scored for Liverpool.

When Wenger heard that Fergie, whose team visit the Emirates on Saturday, was in the directors' box, he turned up the heat by saying: "It will be another test against United but I can say for sure we will go into it even stronger after this performance and result, we will be much stronger.

Warning: Wenger insists his young Gunners side can last the pace

"It is still early in the season but maybe we have convinced a few more people that we can last the pace."

Arsenal, who have a game in hand over United and are top because they have scored one more goal, could have stretched their Premier League lead because Emmanuel Eboue and Fabregas hit a post.

Jubilant Wenger added: "I am so pleased with the performance and attitude of the players.

"This was their first big test of the season and I was delighted how strong they looked.

"There was no sign of the handbrake being on, no restrictions about how we played.

"It was just another great combination of good technical quality and movement and I couldn't fault it.

"The players are continuing to grow together. Compared to last season, they have greater belief and are more mature as a team."

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, however, was reeling from further injury setbacks after striker Fernando Torres and midfielder Xabi Alonso both had their comebacks cut short.

Torres hobbled off at half-time with a recurrence of his abductor strain, while Alonso was helped off with a metatarsal injury, after being out for six weeks with a similar complaint.

Benitez said: "We don't know for sure that Xabi has broken the bone, but it looks like the same injury.

"We'll know more about how long the two will be out after a few more days.

"Arsenal are a sharp, confident team and I thought my players' commitment was excellent."
