Magnusson will fight to keep Tevez

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson is preparing to hold talks with Carlos Tevez and his representative Kia Joorabchian in an attempt to persuade the Argentina striker to stay at the club.

Magnusson, who hopes to formalise the now notorious contract that has sparked so much anger among Premier League clubs, says he is still optimistic Tevez will be at the club next season and also insists club captain Nigel Reo-Coker and central defender Anton Ferdinand will both be staying.

Talks with Joorabchian over the most controversial transfer deal in Premiership history, which are scheduled to take place in the next fortnight, are expected to reach a decision on Tevez's immediate future.

During them, the contract with Joorabchian's company MSI— which will allow the Iranian-born businessman to maintain his economic stake in Tevez's future but also fulfil Premier League rules by omitting any undue influences — is expected to be reinstated.

Magnusson said: "Carlos is a West Ham player and we will try to convince him to stay.

"I hope Carlos will be a West Ham player next season. He is a good lad and a great player. The fans love him and he knows that. He is the kind of player who needs to be loved.

"I am at least optimistic that he will stay. I think we will talk in two weeks' time as Carlos is in Argentina at the moment."

West Ham unilaterally terminated their original agreement with MSI last month to enable him to comply with Premier League rules and play in the last three games of the season.

It was a move that outraged rival clubs and has prompted relegated Sheffield United to seek arbitration over the Premier League's handling of the case, a process that should begin tomorrow.

Although Joorabchian has not accepted West Ham's termination of the contract with MSI, he has tolerated it in anticipation of the forthcoming negotiations.
