Newcastle are closing on a deal for Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock despite Paul Ince insisting none of his squad is for sale.
Rover Staying Put? Newcastle target Stephen Warnock but Blackburn manager Paul Ince wants to keep his squad
Warnock, who has played once for England, has become unsettled after hearing
of Newcastle’s interest and is believed to be keen to speak to them.
However Ince, who has lost David Bentley and Brad Friedel since taking over from Mark Hughes, said: ‘Clubs are trying to unsettle some of my players. The door is shut, the players can’t go, full stop.’
Bentley saw a £15million move to Tottenham as a step up and Friedel was offered a deal he could not refuse by Aston Villa, with Blackburn reluctantly agreeing to sell for £2m.
But Ince faces a battle to hold on to other key players before the transfer window closes on August 31. Villa and Tottenham are tracking £15million-rated striker Roque
Santa Cruz, while Galatasaray would pay a hefty loan fee for Benni McCarthy, who
is also interesting Sunderland.
Ince, who could sign MK Dons skipper Keith Andrews, said: ‘The last thing I want
to do is sell my best players. I can say, 100 per cent, that nobody will be leaving
this club.’
