Makelele turns down big money move

Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has turned down the offer of lucrative contracts on the Continent and pledged to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.

Villarreal, Paris St-Germain, Olympiakos and Major League Soccer have all been interested in signing the former Real Madrid star but he wants to see out the final year of his contract with the FA Cup holders.

The France midfielder has been thwarted in his desire for a single year's contract extension at Stamford Bridge, but, although he is likely to relinquish his first-choice status to the Nigeria international Mikel John Obi, the 34-year-old will stay at Chelsea until his contract expires.
