Mallinder: Abendanon can nick World Cup spot

Nick Abendanon was backed to win a place in England's World Cup squad after his man-of-the-match performance in today's 18-3 Barclays Churchill Cup win over Scotland A.

The Bath full-back created the England Saxons' first try for hooker David Paice and then scored the second shortly after half-time to earn a 15-0 lead.

On a heavy Twickenham pitch, they were the two most illuminating moments in a stop-start encounter dominated by the forward battle.

And Saxons boss Jim Mallinder is sure Abendanon's performance will have caught the eye of England coach Brian Ashton out in South Africa.

"There are players in this team who are holding their hands up for England selection," said Mallinder.

"Brian Ashton has said he will look at all three games. There are certainly players who are pushing for World Cup places.

"I wouldn't say Abendanon is a surprise package. He has been one of the most outstanding full-backs in the Premiership this season and I think he has a very good chance of making the World Cup squad."

Scotland coach Frank Hadden once again bemoaned his side's lack of creativity as they failed to translate a wealth of possession into points. "It is always a concern," he said.

"We don't have that history of outscoring teams on the try count. That is not our track record and it does concern me.

"I am delighted we are creating more opportunities and we are spending more time in the opposition 22. Rest assured, we will spend a lot of time addressing that.

"It was always going to be tough to score today in the conditions because you can't make that second pass comfortably."

Captain Donnie MacFadyen added: "It was frustrating to have so much possession but not come up with the points and the guys are absolutely gutted not to have taken their chances."
