Man in the mask: Terry set to lead Chelsea in Spain

Chelsea captain John Terry is expected to start against Valencia in the Mestalla tonight just four days after an operation on his fractured cheek.

Terry will play wearing a protective mask on the injury, but midfielder Frank Lampard is still ruled out with a thigh problem.

Ready to play: John Terry will wear a protective mask

"It is John Terry's decision," said Chelsea manager Avram Grant. "He wants to play so it is up to him."

If he is caught by a stray elbow tonight another operation will be necessary, but Chelsea team doctor Bryan English said: "If you get a fractured cheekbone behind a certain point you can play on. The chance of getting another blow on the same point is minimal so it is a small risk.

"The reason John came off at half-time against Fulham is because it might have made surgery more complex if he received another blow.

"He couldn't train on Monday because we had to get a mask moulded."

Chelsea have already spoken to UEFA about the prospect of Terry playing in his mask but finally it will be up to Valencia and the discretion of Italian referee Roberto Rosetti.
