have made a £6m offer for Yossi Benayoun, all but ending hopes of re-signing the Israel midfielder.
boss Rafael Benitez must sell before making another bid for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, and the opportunity of a £1m profit on Benayoun could be too good to reject.
In demand: Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun is wanted by Manchester City and his former club West Ham.
Benitez said: 'We're still trying to sign players, and if we have to sell someone we will do so.'
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley asked about Benayoun but is unlikely to match City's bid.
City are considering a move for Fulham's 36-year-old goalkeeper Antti Niemi to complement Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel, while defender Tal Ben Haim's £5m move from Chelsea, first revealed by Sportsmail earlier this month, will go through on Wednesday.
