McCarthy tells Wales boss: Stop talking Tosh

Mick McCarthy has told John Toshack to keep his nose out of club matters with regard to Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood.

The former Republic of Ireland manager has been angered at the comments made by Wales boss Toshack over Eastwood's failure to win a first-team place at the Championship club.

Eastwood: missing out

Toshack said he could not understand why Wolves manager McCarthy spent £1.5million on the striker only to put him on the bench.

Eastwood, who will play for Wales against Cyprus tomorrow, has starred for his country this season.

He has scored twice in three games and linked up well with Craig Bellamy in last month's 5-1 win over Slovakia.

He has started for Wolves just once since then, in a home defeat by Hull.

But McCarthy said: "When I had quite a successful spell as manager with Ireland, I had an unwritten rule that I would never comment on what league managers did.

"I never once tried to pick their team and I used to get annoyed when they tried to pick mine.

"It comes down to what I decide with Wolves. I will do what I think is the right thing to do with Freddy.

"It's nothing personal against Freddy. But just because I paid money for him doesn't mean I can't leave him out.

"There's no vendetta, agenda or anything personal against John, Wales or Freddy."

Derby boss Billy Davies also accused Toshack of "not knowing what he is taking about" after he questioned why Robert Earnshaw was not in the side.

Toshack stressed he was simply making an observation when pressed about the issue before Wales left for Cyprus.

He said: "I must emphasise I was not being critical of any club manager.

"I was simply making the point that when Freddy and Rob Earnshaw went for big money in the summer, it was good news for Wales.

"But the fact they are not playing does not help us.'

Jason Koumas has defended himself after again pulling out of the squad.

The Wigan midfielder said: "There's no way I can play. I want to, but the hip injury is causing me too much pain.

"I had an X-ray in Wales this week. They found a problem with my hip which has caused pain in my groin and thigh. It's something I have had for a while."
