McCaw: We have eased all our pain after Tri-Nation win over Australia

The pain of successive defeats spurred New Zealand and returning skipper Richie McCaw to their revenge victory over Australia in Auckland. Flanker McCaw, back after a six-week injury lay-off, said of Saturday's 39-10 Tri-Nations win: 'The boys had been hurting and wanted a good performance. When you lose two in a row it's a question of how you get back on the horse. We've set the standard.'

Dan Carter kicked 19 points for the All Blacks, beaten 34-19 in Sydney seven days earlier having lost to South Africa at home a fortnight before that.

South Africa have released three members of their 2007 World Cupwinning rugby squad - Francois Steyn, Ruan Pienaar and Gurthro Steenkamp - to play in the provincial Currie Cup rather than join the preparations for Saturday's Mandela Challenge Test against Argentina in Johannesburg.

Sebastien Loeb, the four-times world champion, won the Finnish Rally for the first time yesterday. Driving a Citroen, it was the Frenchman's 42nd world championship victory and he finished nine seconds ahead of Finn Mikko Hirvonen in a Ford.
