McClaren calls on injured Terry and Co to act as England's mascots

Bill Shankly ignored them in the corridor, Jose Mourinho barely recognised their existence, but Steve McClaren will surround himself with England's walking wounded at tonight's big game.

The head coach wants the players who began the Euro 2008 campaign with a 5-0 victory over Andorra in September last year to be in the dressing room at Wembley.

John Terry, who has spent the past two days with the squad at their hotel, Wayne Rooney and the suspended Rio Ferdinand will all be there.

Michael Owen, in Germany receiving treatment for a thigh injury, is expected to fly back.

The dressing rooms at the stadium are large enough to house the population of a small country and the quartet, along with 23 players and members of the backroom team, will be on hand to offer last-minute encouragement.

McClaren believes they can provide moral support for England's warriors.

He said: 'We all have a role to play in this. I've been involved in many games where we have needed to win, draw or get an away goal.

'I've got a staff used to these big games and everyone contributes.'
