McClaren set to go Dutch as a manager
18 May 2008
McClaren was spotted in the stands at the Amsterdam ArenA yesterday as FC Twente clinched a place in the Champions League at the expense of Ajax with a 2-1 aggregate victory in the Dutch League play-offs.
What a drip: Steve McClaren has found a new job abroad
Positive talks are already understood to have taken place between McClaren and the club, and he is expected to be announced as replacement for current head coach Fred Rutten — who will join German side Schalke in the summer — early this week.
McClaren has been on the look-out for a managerial job ever since being sacked as national coach last November following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
His name had been linked with the QPR post following the sacking of Luigi De Canio, only for Iain Dowie to be handed the job, and he has also been linked with Derby.
But, having seen his reputation take a battering since the defeat by Croatia at Wembley, McClaren has opted for the chance to manage abroad.
