McCoy believes back injury may be just bruising

Tony McCoy believes that the back injury he sustained on Saturday could be just bad bruising.

McCoy, who will be transferred from a Coventry Hospital to Oxford today to undergo further scans, has definitely cracked two ribs but feels that despite an initial diagnosis of a fracture of his T12 vertebra, the damage may not be that serious.

Worrying times: trainer Jonjo O'Neill (centre) looks on as Tony McCoy is put into an ambulance after a his fall at Warwick

The champion jockey was hurt after falling from Arnold Layne in Warwick's Totesport Classic Chase but is convinced he will be back for the Cheltenham Festival which starts eight weeks today.

He said: "A second scan suggested the vertebra may not be cracked. The course doctors and paramedics were very professional and as soon as they realised it could be a back injury, wouldn't let me move. I'm not in much pain but should know for sure today."

Meanwhile, Joe Fanning, another jockey to have suffered back problems after a fall, is set for a return to the saddle.

Fanning, who sustained a fracture of his T4 vertebra at Goodwood in August has resumed riding and hopes to be back in action next month.
