McFadden's mettle galvanizes Everton

James McFadden saved Everton from another European humiliation as David Moyes' side limped through to the group stage of the UEFA Cup in the Ukraine last night.

The striker who helped Scotland down France in Paris last month, prevented a giantkilling act on this occasion with a second-half equaliser to deny brave Metalist who then conceded a late Victor Anichebe goal which gave Everton outright victory.

Everton saw off FC Metalist 3-2 in Ukraine to earn a 4-3 aggregate win in the UEFA Cup thanks to goals from Joleon Lescott (right), James McFadden (left) and Victor Anichebe

The Ukrainians, who snatched a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park despite being reduced to nine men, had threatened another upset as they twice took the lead through Brazilian midfielder Edmar and Hitcham Mahdoufi, only for Joleon Lescott — with his fifth goal of the season — and McFadden to peg them back.

Despite Anichebe's effort giving the scoreline late gloss, it had not been a dominant show from Everton.

But at least they managed to avoid going out at the first hurdle as they did two years ago when they lost in the Champions League to Villarreal and the UEFA Cup to Dinamo Bucharest.

Moyes sprung something of a surprise in his starting line-up by dropping Leighton Baines to the bench, moving Lescott to left-back and bringing Joseph Yobo back.

Leon Osman returned to give Everton some much-needed guile in midfield. Andrew Johnson, however, failed a late fitness test and a place on the bench went to rookie forward Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Metalist's ramshackle home is in the process of receiving a facelift in preparation for Euro 2012, but that did not prevent a terrific atmosphere in front of 30,000 fans.

The Ukrainians started confidently and had the first real chance after six minutes when Everton appealed in vain for offside as striker Lacha Jakobiya fired just over Tim Howard's bar from the edge of the area.

Great leveller: Joleon Lescott grabs the first Everton equaliser

It was no surprise when Moyes's side fell behind five minutes later. Everton were still claiming a penalty after McFadden was tripped when Metalist broke with nice build-up play involving Marko Devic for Edmar to beat Howard with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

The most frustrating thing for Moyes was that his one real creative talent, Mikel Arteta, saw little of the ball.

It was a bitterly disappointing first-half display, but Everton should have levelled seven minutes before the interval following a wonderful piece of skill by Steven Pienaar.

The South African turned his marker before picking out Osman with a precision cross, but Osman put a point-blank header straight at keeper Olexandr Goryainov.

Whatever Moyes said to his players at the interval had immediate effect. Arteta teed up Pienaar for a shot which was deflected into the path of Lescott who turned the ball in from close in.

But then Olexandr Rykun's effort rebounded off the post into the path of Mahdoufi who made no mistake with Howard helpless.

Moyes's side still only needed a goal to go through and McFadden produced it after 72 minutes, collecting on the edge of the area and curling in a shot.

Anichebe showed great composure with his 89th minute strike.
