McGeady is better than Barca's big guns, says Celtic star Caldwell

Celtic defender Gary Caldwell claims Aiden McGeady's current form is better than any of Barcelona's big-name players - and he believes the Republic of Ireland international could also star in the Nou Camp one day.

Barcelona's 'fantastic four' of Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry arrived in Glasgow with the rest of Frank Rijkaard's squad for the first leg of the Champions League last-16 clash at Parkhead on Wednesday.

On form: McGeady

Barcelona beat Real Zaragoza 2-1 in La Liga on Saturday night but their recent results have been indifferent and they remain five points behind leaders Real Madrid.

The Catalan club will come up against a Celtic side who have hit top form since the turn of the year, helped by the form of talented wide man McGeady.

Asked if McGeady is good enough to play for Barcelona, Caldwell said: "You would have to ask Frank Rijkaard, he picks the team.

"But yes, I think he is a top player and will definitely go places and play for whoever he wants in the future. Aiden McGeady is the form player at the minute.

"If you were watching the games recently, he is the one that is on top of his form. Obviously Messi is a big danger for them, as are many others, but I'm sure they will be as worried about Aiden as we are about their players."

Celtic were knocked out by AC Milan at the same stage last season when Kaka scored for the Italians in extra-time in the San Siro.

However, Caldwell insists Barcelona will offer an even bigger challenge than the Italian giants, who went on to beat Liverpool in the final.

He said: "Milan had a different attitude to the game and they play a different way. Barca are all-out attack and are probably the best team in the world to watch at the minute.

"When they go forward they go forward with pace and have some tremendous players so we will have to be on our guard to try and keep them out.

"We are all looking forward to it and we all want to progress because there are other big games to come. I don't think there is a fear factor. We all know what they can do and that can inspire you to be better.

"It keeps you more on your toes than you maybe would be but there is definitely no fear."

Barcelona are the only team to win at Celtic Park in the Champions League, when former Celtic hero Henrik Larsson scored in a 3-1 win in September 2004.

Since then the Hoops have gone on an 11-game unbeaten run at home against teams from eight countries.

Celtic have yet to win away from home in the competition but Caldwell insists victory tomorrow night is not essential for the Glasgow side to qualify.

He said: "A win would obviously be great but last year we drew against Milan in the first game at home and we were unlucky not to go through over there.

"So I don't think the pressure is on us to win but obviously a win would help us in the away leg."
