McLeish handed war chest as Birmingham fight against the drop

David Sullivan has re-assured Alex McLeish that money will be made available to him next month as Birmingham City's new boss plots a Premier League survival course.

More Birmingham news

Ahead of a crunch clash at St Andrew's this afternoon against Middlesbrough, Sullivan said: "I am excited by the prospect of us probably bringing in three or four players who could make the difference.

Reinforcements: McLeish will be able to bolster his squad

"At the moment the best players see us as one of the strong candidates for relegation. We can't sell the club to the bigger names. So we will be looking at seasoned pros.

"Alex will tell us the players he likes and we will see if we can afford them. I am sure we will be finding quite a few million to bring in what we need."

Meanwhile, Jonathan Woodgate heads into the new year with yet another fitness problem, having been withdrawn in three games because his calf muscles are cramping and no one knows why.

"He is cheesed off," said Boro manager Gareth Southgate. "We're doing tests to see what may be the cause. It's not happening in training just matches."
