McLeish ups McFadden stakes to £5m as Kapo set to rejoin Bruce at Wigan while Blackburn and Bolton eye Koumas

Alex McLeish will underline his desperation to keep Birmingham in the Barclays Premier League by raising his offer for James McFadden to £5m.

McLeish, who yesterday secured the £2m purchase of Hibernian defender David Murphy, at first offered £2m less for McFadden but is now ready to almost double that bid for a player he got to know well while in charge of Scotland.

McLeish is very familiar with McFadden from his time as Scotland manager

Everton boss David Moyes is almost certain to accept the offer that would provide success for Birmingham over Celtic and Rangers for a player who has 18 months to run of his current contract but has refused to sign a new deal.

McLeish is likely to allow Olivier Kapo to follow his former manager Steve Bruce to Wigan.

Bruce signed the France international from Juventus for £3m last summer and is preparing a bid of £2.5m for the talented midfielder.

He believes that the 27-year-old can replace Jason Koumas after deciding to listen to offers for the Wales international who joined Wigan for a club record £5.3m from West Bromwich at the start of the season.

Blackburn and Bolton are ready to go head to head for him, especially as they now understand that Bruce is prepared to take a £1.5m cut on Koumas.
