Mega-bucks Manchester City agree £19m club record signing of Jo

Boy from Brazil: CSKA Moscow striker Jo is on his way to Eastlands

Manchester City last night moved closer to the £19million signing of Brazilian international Jo from CSKA Moscow.

The 21-year-old striker was granted a work permit at a hearing yesterday and the transfer will be completed in the next couple of days.

Jo will be the first signing by new City manager Mark Hughes, who joined from Blackburn two weeks ago.

Jo, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, scored 44 goals in 77 games for CSKA Moscow.

Born in Sao Paolo, he made his debut for Corinthians' first team in 2003 and scored 13 goals in 81 appearances before moving to CSKA in 2006.

City have gone back to the future with their new black and red away shirt, which is similar to the one worn in the 1960s and 1970s.

Hughes had been keen to complete the deal ready for the start of the UEFA Cup campaign on July 17.

CSKA had hoped to hang on to the prolific striker until City met his buyout clause and Jo revealed he was keen to test himself in the Premier League.

After hearing of City's interest last month, the 6ft 2in striker said: 'Who would not want to play in England? In my opinion, Manchester City are one of the top six clubs in England.'

Jo has been capped once and was keen on a move to one of Europe's elite leagues in a bid to secure a regular place in the Brazil squad. Everton, Valencia, Real Madrid and both Milan clubs had tracked his progress.

Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who represents Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, advised the striker to choose England.

CSKA president Yevgeny Giner said: 'It's the right price for Jo. I think it would be wrong now not to let the player move to England.'
