Meite looks to the heavens for help

Defender Abdoulaye Meite fears that only divine intervention — or the return of Sam Allardyce — can halt Bolton's decline.

The team that Allardyce steered to seventh place last season before quitting to manage Newcastle slipped to the bottom of the Premier League with Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

On the way down: Meite challenges Andriy Shevchenko in another defeat for Bolton

Bolton, with one win in 10 games, appear to be struggling to replace sacked boss Sammy Lee, and Ivory Coast centre half Meite said: 'Maybe the only solution would be the return of Allardyce, but that's impossible. Or maybe the Messiah!'

Meite's irreverence is indicative of the increasing desperation at the club. Prospective managers will think twice, and Paul Jewell, the former Wigan boss, will reject any determined effort from club chairman Phil Gartside.

There are also growing concerns that star striker Nicolas Anelka, whose new extended deal this season was trumpeted as a coup, will quit the club in the January transfer window.
