Memories of Barry Sheene drive on fast MotoGP learner Toseland

If James Toseland required confirmation that he made the right decision by swapping his life as Superbikes world champion for the grind of establishing himself in MotoGP, it will come at Donington Park tomorrow in front of 80,000 British motorcycling devotees.
The 27-year-old Tech3 Yamaha rider graduated to the premier class of two-wheel sport in order to test himself.
Toseland: Top three aim
In spite of machinery that is inferior to that being ridden by five-times MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi and reigning champion Casey Stoner, Toseland has proved competitive in his new environment.
Now he wants to move up from the sixth position he has achieved in four of the seven rounds so far and prove himself the true successor to Barry Sheene, the last British winner of a Grand Prix 27 years ago.
Toseland said: 'It has been far too long since we last had success. It's been a dry spell.
'I know all about Barry Sheene and it's disappointing we haven't had success in the top class for such a long time. I hope to put that right.
'I've been learning very quickly in this class and I now fully believe that the challenge of MotoGP is possible. It's up to me to make that happen.
'The environment is very much sink or swim. I've been swimming so far and I intend to prove that this weekend. I've had a lot to learn but I know the bike is capable of a top three place. I would be very disappointed with another sixth-place finish. I'm getting bored with them, to be honest, but I know I'm improving and this is the race where I want to prove that most of all.
'I'm the only British rider here. Everyone has come to see a British success and it's all down to me.
'There is a lot of pressure on me because of that but I don't mind at all. 'In fact, I seem to be able to concentrate better when the heat is on. I can't wait to show it on the track.'.
