Message is clear for Cockbain - you're out

Brent Cockbain has been axed from Wales's World Cup plans — via his answering machine. The Lions lock was yesterday on his way home from visiting family in Australia when coach Gareth Jenkins named his provisional squad.

Today the Osprey, when he checks his messages, will discover he has been dropped from Jenkins's World Cup preparations — 24 hours after the squad was made public.

Cockbain: Left out

Jenkins said: "I haven't spoken to Brent personally yet but I've left messages for him. The door isn't closed because circumstances always change in the lead-up to a World Cup.

"But we have concerns over the lineout and I've picked a squad who will develop that area as well as providing strong ball-carrying capability and aggressive defence."

Cockbain, 32, was a surprise inclusion for the last World Cup and helped Wales win the the Grand Slam in 2005.

Wales travel to France for a week-long training camp next month before a friendly at Twickenham against England on August 4. Full back Thomas Castaignede is a surprise omission from France's 30-man squad.

Pascal Pape, who captained Les Bleus in two Tests against New Zealand earlier this month, also misses out. Sale's Sebastien Chabal is named among the back row forwards.

WALES training squad — Backs: A Brew, L Byrne, G Henson, J Hook, S Parker, M Phillips, S Williams (Ospreys), G Cooper (Gloucester), G Evans, D James, M Jones, S Jones, D Peel (Llanelli Scarlets), T James, J Robinson, T Shanklin, G Thomas (Cardiff Blues), K Morgan, C Sweeney (Newport Gwent).
