Michael Vaughan left out of England squad to tour West Indies

Michael Vaughan was today left out of England's squad to tour the Caribbean next month but he has been assured that the door is still open for next summer's Ashes series.

National selector Geoff Miller, who has named a 16-man party for a four-match series against West Indies, said: "Michael has not yet had the opportunity to prove his form in order to be considered for the Test side.

"He does, however, remain very much in our thoughts as we continue to plan for the Ashes series against Australia."

Vaughan, who made a tearful resignation speech when quitting as captain four months ago, has barely played since his poor series with the bat against South Africa.

The 34-year-old managed a couple of late-season Championship matches for Yorkshire but scored only 43 runs in four innings. His hopes of starring for England's back-up 'performance' squad in India were then ended when that trip was abandoned as a result of the terrorist attacks on Mumbai.

Miller said: "Michael will play a full part in Yorkshire's pre-season programme, which will include a tour to Dubai, and we will continue to monitor his form closely once the domestic season begins in April."

Although Vaughan has missed out on a Caribbean trip, his Yorkshire team-mate Adil Rashid is the one surprise name in England's Test squad.

Leg-spinner Rashid, 20, was added to the party in India before Christmas to gain experience but he has now been given the chance to put real pressure on senior slow bowlers Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann.
