The former England skipper is one of three players — Ian Bell and MCC captain Rob Key are the others — who will try over the next four days to stake an early claim for the No 3 spot held by Middlesex batsman Owais Shah.

Vaughan has not played for his country since he quit after five years as captain last August, but insisted: "My ambition hasn't changed. I would love to play in the Test match at Lord's against West Indies next month. The only way I'm going to do that is by scoring runs, and I'm sure that scoring runs this week would do my chances no harm at all.

"You could say the same for Rob Key and Ian Bell. The No3 slot for England looks vacant. I have played well there in the past, and Bell has had a go there. Most of the players in the MCC team will feel they have a chance of playing in the Tests — that's what we're looking at."

Bell was dropped after the First Test in West Indies following a run of low scores, while Key has not represented England since January 2005. But the Kent captain was included in the 25-man performance squad, and knows a prolific start to the season will catapult him into contention.

Other England hopefuls included by MCC are Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid, Lancashire paceman Sajid Mahmood and Essex wicket-keeper James Foster.
