Mick Channon is excited by returning Sonning Rose
24 August 2010
The daughter of Hawk Wing finished runner-up to Zaidan in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot in June but has not run since.
The two-year-old, who was narrowly beaten by useful colt Crown Prosecutor at the Sussex track on her debut in May, is one of an 11-strong entry for the Group Three event over seven furlongs.
With a Pontefract victory supplementing her two close defeats in three starts, the bargain buy has already repaid her 11,000 guineas price tag.
And Channon thinks there is better to come. He said: "She's in great form and she's thrived since her run in the Chesham. We gave her a break after Ascot. She just needed a bit of time."
Sonning Rose could face one of the most exciting fillies in training, Date With Destiny. The Richard Hannon-trained juvenile, a Group One Fillies' Mile entry, is the only foal born to the late champion George Washington.
Sir Michael Stoute has engaged Newbury maiden winner Cape Dollar, while Ralph Beckett could run Princess Severus, who looked impressive when beating Wolf Slayer by two lengths at Leicester last month.
Channon added: "It will be a good race and certainly won't be easy but Sonning Rose is a smashing filly and everything is in place.
"She's got a bit of speed and I think she has done well for having a break so we will take it from there. Whatever she does, next year is very much the plan for her."
