Mick Quinlan: Silk Affair can make mark with luck of the draw

Mick Quinlan has his fingers crossed that the draw will be kind to Silk Affair in Saturday's Totesport Cesarewitch at Newmarket, because he says his filly is "thrown in" at the weights.

The four-year-old, who will be having her first run since winning the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, has been backed into 16-1 with the sponsors for the two-mile two-furlong handicap.

The trainer, who has booked Paul Hanagan to ride, is bullish. Quinlan said: "I think she's nicely handicapped. She's rated 135 over hurdles and so she'd be rated about 105 on the Flat. By that reckoning, she's a stone well off.

"We'd have liked to have got a run into her, but the ground has been a bit firm, and ideally we'd like a drop of rain. So instead we took her for a racecourse gallop and she's in great form.

"As long as she isn't drawn out in the car park, she very nicely handicapped and if she gets good ground, you'd have to think she'd have a great chance. She looks thrown in."

Silk Affair's long-term goal is the David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, although Quinlan added: "If it came up bottomless, we'd go for the Champion Hurdle."

Cesarewitch (Totesport): 5 Darley Sun, 8 Electrolyser, Swingkeel, 10 Bahrain Storm, 12 Mamlook, Sweetheart, Wells Lyrical, Yes Mr President, 16 bar.
