Mickelson's determined to hit back

The world No2 carded a nine-over par round of 79 which included a triple bogey at the sixth.

But the three-time Major winner is confident of posting a low round when he tees off with Japan's Hideto Tanihara and Paul Casey at 2.42pm today.

He said: "When you shoot 79 you're going to have to come back with something pretty cool to get back in it.

"I thought I would be in the middle of the field after my first round, but now I'm near the bottom.

"I don't remember how strong the winds were on the Friday 10 years ago. I know they were touching 50mph, so it was a tough day.

"But the rain yesterday made it so more difficult. Whether it was the grips or the way it affected the ball more.

"I'm a few shots back but with three rounds to go, so a solid round will get me right back in it."
