Gibson has dismissed any talk of sacking Southgate who is under increasing pressure following Middlesbrough's run of ten games without a win.

Southgate admits he is not expecting to break the Boro bank in the New Year, but he is hoping to bring in new blood.

The Boro boss said: "There are certain positions we need to strengthen and may be three or four targets for each position and we want to keep watching players over the coming weeks to finalise them."

"We spent money available in the summer and I probably got more than I thought. With the position we are in and the way attendances have been over the last couple of years, we have to cut our cloth accordingly and we have to make sure we do the right things in January. Whether we will have millions to spend I doubt very much."

Boro midfielder Julio Arca came through his first reserve run-out at Bolton last night and is in line for return at Reading on Saturday.
