Middlesbrough's Southgate salutes his 'king of Istanbul'

It has taken a while but the 'King of Istanbul', as Gareth Southgate acclaimed him, is beginning to assert his regal presence.

Tuncay's three goals in as many games have earned Middlesbrough seven points this month, finally justifying Southgate's decision to sign him from Fenerbahce in the summer.

The Turkey striker's matchwinning volley was a cut above anything else on show at Pride Park and Southgate said: 'Being left out of the team for a few weeks has given Tuncay the chance to have a look at the League and what's needed.

"His response has been excellent. He realises the physical demands a bit better. He is away from his family and he was the King of Istanbul, a superstar in Turkey and sometimes that is difficult to adjust to.' 'It can be a shock to the system playing in the Premier League but I think we're starting to see the best of him.' Derby boss Paul Jewell must be wishing they had been as adventurous as Boro in their transfer dealings last summer. Among the squad he inherited from Billy Davies, Jewell has a modest selection of strikers in Kenny Miller, Steve Howard and Robert Earnshaw. His defence is just as weak as his attack and he faces a dilemma next month; accept relegation and save his money to spend prudently in the summer or gamble on what he admits would be 'panic buys' in January.

"It's a difficult one because the supporters deserve 100 per cent effort from us to stay in the Premier League," said Jewell.

"But I also feel a responsibility to the club that if we have to go down and there's money to spend, maybe we'll spend it better in the summer.

"Please don't think I'm raising the white flag. The last place I want to be is in the Championship, but if it does happen I think we can become stronger."
