Mighty Man injury could end career

Mighty Man suffered a tendon injury that threatens to end his career in the Stayers' Hurdle won by 16-1 shot Refinement yesterday.

The 5-4 favourite, successful at Aintree earlier this month, was leading when going lame before the third-last hurdle and was pulled up by Richard Johnson.

Trainer Henry Daly said: "He's very, very sore. It's not a life-threatening injury, but it might end his career."

Mighty Man's departure and a dismal display by former champion hurdler Brave Inca left the way clear for a finish of outsiders with Jonjo O'Neill's mare Refinement coming from last to first under Tony McCoy to beat Powerstation and United.

Colm Murphy, trainer of Brave Inca who trailed in a poor sixth, said: "It's been a long year. I wouldn't read too much into that performance as he has had some hard races."

Refinement's victory completed a clean sweep of the Grade One races for British raiders.

Punjabi, trained by Nicky Henderson, had earlier won the Champion 4YO Hurdle, while Another Promise took the Swordlestown Cup Novice Chase for Ferdy Murphy when beating Royal Shakespeare.
