Millwall's May hoping to silence his critics

Ben May hopes his match-winning display in last night's FA Cup third-round replay victory over Walsall will help get the Millwall boo-boys off his back.

Forgotten man May, who has been a target for a section of the crowd in the past, celebrated his first Millwall start since September by scoring one goal and setting up the other for Gary Alexander in a 2-1 win.

The striker admitted: "Some of the fans have been on my back and it was a nerve-racking start, but it was a nice feeling to score and hopefully it will keep them quiet for a while.

"It's hard when you hear people shouting bad things at you. You expect it from the away fans, but not your own supporters. It got me down and I was going home and taking it out on my girlfriend Natalie.

"It's only happened this season, but I've come through the ranks here and I'm determined to win the supporters round by giving my all for Millwall."

May is out of contract in the summer and rejected a move to Shrewsbury last week after spending a month on loan at Scunthorpe.

May admitted: "I don't really know what's going to happen in the future."

But boss Kenny Jackett, whose side face Coventry in the next round, said: "Shrewsbury made us an offer for Ben, but he elected to stay with us and I'm glad because I think he's got a future here."
