Misery for Mowbray as top-flight Albion flounder at the Pools

Hartlepool 3-1 West Bromwich Albion
(After extra-time, 1-1 at 90mins)
By COLIN YOUNG
As a Saltburn lad who was a member of the Middlesbrough team who fought for their very existence at Victoria Park more than 20 years ago, Tony Mowbray once had very fond memories of Hartlepool.
Winning, the Pools: Ritchie Barker hits Hartlepool's third goal as they knock West Brom out of the Carling Cup
All that changed when the boss returned to Teesside to see his team humiliated in extra-time and he admitted: 'It's disappointing and frustrating. They probably deserved the victory so fair play to them.'
His side were a goal down in the 61st minute after an embarrassing slip by Leon Barnett.
The centre-back hesitated as he tried to clear, allowing Gary Liddle to slip the ball neatly into the path of Australia striker, Joel Porter.
Porter, who had a first-half strike disallowed for offside, side-footed past Irish keeper Dean Kiely.
The visitors looked to be on their way out until Slovenia midfielder Robert Koren scored in the 87th minute, beating keeper Arran Lee-Barrett with a delightful shot from 30 yards to force extra-time.
Albion then hit the bar twice through a header from Abdoulaye Meite and a free-kick from substitute Craig Beattie.
But Albion went behind again when 21-year-old substitute striker David Foley capitalised on further slack defending from their top-flight opponents.
A quick free-kick from Liddle allowed Antony Sweeney to play into the path of Foley, who slide the ball home.
Ritchie Barker then compounded Mowbray's misery with another simple strike from Mattie Robson's deep cross.
Danny Wilson's assistant, Ian Butterworth, said: 'It's a great night for the club. The lads played with their brains as well as their hearts.'
