Modric a doubt for start of season

Tottenham's most expensive summer signing Luka Modric may miss the start of the season with a knee injury.

Manager Juande Ramos was hoping the Croatian midfielder could make an immediate impact while he struggles to sign a new striker.

Croatia's assistant manager Aljosa Asanovic revealed today, though, that the £16.5million signing sustained a knee problem last week.

Asanovic said: "It could prevent him playing at the start of the new season, but it is painful more than serious."

Ramos saw a deal for Andrei Arshavin collapse earlier this week and the Russian has now gone on strike at Zenit St Petersburg after they demanded £21m for him after allegedly promising he could leave for £9.5m.
