Monty 'can turn things around'

Northamptonshire head coach David Capel insists Monty Panesar can still be a match-winner for England.

The spinner has come under scrutiny once again after his toothless showing in the second innings of England's First Test defeat to India.

On a deteriorating Chennai pitch expected to aid his bowling, Panesar returned figures of none for 105 as the hosts cruised to their victory target of 387.

The 26-year-old's toil raised new question marks over his Test future after recent struggles in sub-continental series against Sri Lanka and the Indians. But Panesar's county boss Capel believes he has been hampered by the lack of preparation following the Mumbai terror attacks, and insists he will bounce back.

"He needs time to work on his variations in first-class cricket," Capel told BBC Radio 5Live.

"It's not quite as easy when you're touring with the England team, with fewer first-class matches between Tests, if any, and we haven't seen him much at Northants over the past few years.

"But he was one of the fastest players ever to take 100 wickets and he's won Tests for England in the past and he'll do it again in the future."
