Mourinho tells Shevchenko: You've been a failure

Jose Mourinho has cast doubt on Andriy Shevchenko's future by telling the striker he has failed in his first season at Chelsea.

Despite 13 goals, the Ukrainian has not lived up to expectations and has endured a difficult relationship with the boss.

£30.8million signing from AC Milan is thought to be open to a move, with his former club and Barcelona interested. But his £130,000-a-week wages and reduced value are obstacles to a transfer and Mourinho has set out the conditions for him to prosper at Stamford Bridge.

Asked if he wanted Shevchenko to stay, Mourinho said: "He is a Chelsea player, he has a contract and if he wants to try everything to improve, of course. It is up to him if he wants to improve.

"I hope he is not happy with what he gave to this team. Sheva's season was not what everyone was thinking, including myself."

He underlined the criticism by speaking up for Michael Ballack despite the furore over his ankle injury and recent form.

"Ballack, even against some opinion, has contributed to the team positively," said Mourinho.

"He scored the goal to put Chelsea into the FA Cup Final and the goal that put us in the Champions League semi-final."

Mourinho expects a low-key time in the transfer market. Free agent Steve Sidwell is today expected to be the first signing, from Reading, but is viewed as a squad player.

Didier Drogba, meanwhile, hit his 20th league goal of the season in yesterday's 1-1 draw with Everton to win the Golden Boot, then declared himself fit for the FA Cup Final on Saturday.

Drogba, dogged by an ankle injury, said: "Since I arrived I have had difficult moments but the people at the club and the fans kept behind me. That helped a lot.

"I wanted to play to be ready for the Cup Final. I know better how my body feels and I think I will be ready."
